Ankeny, Iowa offers much for its residents. As part of the Des Moines metro area, Ankeny provides easy access to major retailers as well as city attractions in a relaxed atmosphere. This growing town has also been recognized by several national lists for its high level of livability. These designations include being a great town to raise a family, according to Family Circle magazine, as well as a top place to live as ranked by CNN Money. In 2014, the Kaboom! Foundation recognized Ankeny as one of the Most Playful in the United States for the eighth year in a row.
Ankeny Art Center
In celebration of their rich multicultural community, the Ankeny Art Center is the town's primary venue for vibrant and diverse displays of artistic talent. With a rotating array of different artists in their main and side galleries, the Ankeny Art Center offers its popular Art in the Park event annually. An entire palette of events allow residents to access cultural and artistic events year round. Currently, the Central Iowa Textile Artists (CITA) are being featured.
Saylorville Lake Recreation Area
Saylorville Lake, in operation since 1977, provides Ankeny with numerous natural resources. In addition to many self-guided activities such as fishing, hiking, boating, camping picnicking as well as access to a range of water and winter sports, this 26,000 acre recreational paradise offers planned activities throughout the year. A few of the upcoming events that residents can look forward to include:
- The Red Feather Prairie Maze invites participants to learn about the wildlife and plants that make the prairie their home while also completing a passport booklet. Passports that are complete can be exchanged for a prize at the Saylorville Lake Visitor Center.
- Celebrate National Public Lands Day on September 28th with a Shoreline Cleanup Saylorville Lake. For every three hours that a volunteer contributes to helping to keep the Saylorville Lake area cleaned, one free night of camping is earned.
- Starting on October 1st, residents can register for the Halloween Prowl that is set to take place on October 25th from 3 to 7pm.
